Getting unstuck

Getting stuck feels a bit like like hitting a brick wall but it’s the unfortunate curse of the creative. At this dismal time of year it would be so tempting to give into this stalling and snuggle up on the sofa, but the first thing I know I need to do is to turn up!

I’ve learnt that switching media is a great strategy for me during these blocks. Also, narrowing my options - breadth is not always best and setting boundaries works best when I’m stalling. Turning these episodes into opportunities to experiment is actually motivating.

Mixed media is my 'go to' for playing outside the box - laying down with black and burnt sienna inks, adding texture and random marks and then letting go of anything that becomes too precious. I basically let the process take me where it will and who cares about the end result.

I really admire artists who can stay loyal to the original process and work through their brick wall. I just find that one simple change acts as a conduit, allowing flow back into the dialogue and inadvertently creating energy where it wasn’t before.
