Colour as Expression & Emotion Workshop

A fantastic weekend workshop at Harbour House in Kingsbridge, attended by 6 super creatives, some beginners and some further along their painting journey but all with an open mind about using colour creatively.

Colour is a powerful communication tool - it can be loud and dynamic or quiet and subdued; it can be used to create atmosphere, impart emotion, increase depth, create dynamism and attract attention. Learning about colour takes time and a willingness to experiment and explore. My first tip to beginners is always to use a limited number of colours, for example I tend to only use three or four colours in an image plus a warm and/or cool white. This not only encourages colour mixing and the building of a visual colour ‘dictionary’ but the restriction helps the eye to move around a painting. There is so much to learning about colour - from tonal value through to different palettes and saturations - its an exciting topic and definitely makes for a really fun workshop!
